Filming in Portugal: Local Producer, Fixer & Production Support
The foundation of any production partnership is trust. When filming in a foreign country, that trust depends on having someone on the ground who understands the local production environment, knows how things work and can connect your production with the right people, places and resources.
Based in Lisbon and working across Portugal, I can work as a Lisbon video producer, local producer, fixer and production support partner, or build the local crew and resources your shoot requires. Depending on the project, that support can range from a single local contact on the ground to coordinating a wider network of experienced professionals in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve and elsewhere in Portugal.
That support can include crew sourcing and coordination, location scouting, filming-permission support, studio and equipment sourcing, transport coordination, scheduling, suppliers, catering, local talent sourcing and practical production logistics. I can help find local actors, artists, musicians and other contributors when a project requires them.
Portugal itself offers a rare mix of diverse locations, reliable weather, strong technical resources and very different landscapes and architecture within relatively short distances — from Lisbon’s historic streets to the Atlantic coast, rural interiors and the Algarve.
Lisbon as a Strategic Production Base
Being based in Lisbon is strategically useful for productions that need to move beyond the capital. From here I can reach much of mainland Portugal within a few hours, whether a shoot moves north towards Porto, south to the Algarve, or into central and interior regions. Lisbon also provides the main national and international transport connections needed when a production extends to Madeira or the Azores.
Just as important is the network behind that mobility. Many of the professional relationships, partnerships and national and international contacts I have built over the years continue to play a practical role in the work I do today. They help me assemble crews, source equipment and suppliers, scout locations and connect visiting productions with reliable local professionals rather than starting from zero on each project.

Local Production Support: What I Can Coordinate
I provide practical fixer and local production support in Portugal for international clients, agencies and production companies. The role can be adapted to the project — from helping an existing production team navigate the local environment to sourcing and coordinating the people, places and resources required for the shoot.
Depending on the production, support can include:
- Crew Sourcing & Coordination: Connecting productions with experienced professional crews in Portugal, including camera, lighting, grip, sound, art and production personnel.
- Location Scouting & Filming Permissions: Scouting suitable locations and supporting the process of obtaining the permissions and filming permits required for the production.
- Studios, Equipment & Suppliers: Sourcing and coordinating studios, camera, lighting, sound and grip equipment, specialist suppliers and other production resources.
- Transport, Catering & Production Logistics: Coordination of local transport, catering, schedules, suppliers and practical requirements before and during the shoot.
- Local Talent & Contributors: Support with sourcing local actors, artists, musicians and other creative or on-camera contributors according to the needs of the production.
- Cinematography & Directing: When relevant to the project, I can also contribute directly as a Director of Photography (DoP), filmmaker or director, or help source additional creative and technical specialists.
Scalable Crews & Parallel Production Workflows
Creative Visuals does not operate with a fixed crew structure. Productions are scaled according to the creative, technical, logistical and turnaround requirements of each project. Diogo may work independently, lead a small agile team or assemble experienced specialists when a production requires dedicated departments, additional capacity or parallel workflows.
- Sound: For compact productions, location sound can be handled directly by Diogo or with the support of a camera/video assistant. More demanding productions can include dedicated sound recordists and sound engineers with extensive experience in cinema, advertising and professional audiovisual production.
- Camera, Lighting & Production Crew: Additional camera operators, camera assistants, gaffers, lighting crew, production assistants and other specialists can be added according to the scale and technical requirements of the shoot.
- Drone & FPV: Aerial filming can be handled directly where appropriate, while more demanding operational environments or specialised FPV work can be coordinated with experienced professional drone and FPV operators.
- Editing & Post-Production: Diogo handles editing, colour grading, sound editing, sound design and final mixing when direct creative continuity through post-production is important. Trusted editors and post-production collaborators can also join for higher-volume work, rapid turnarounds or productions where filming and editing need to happen simultaneously.
- Teleprompter, Makeup & Hair, Motion Graphics: Professional teleprompter equipment can be included when required, makeup and hair professionals can be arranged, and motion graphics can be produced directly or with specialist collaborators depending on the project.
For productions requiring fast or same-day delivery, parallel workflows can be assembled with multiple camera or photography operators and an on-location editor working while filming is still in progress. The multi-stage CHANGAN case study below is one example of this approach.
Case Study: CHANGAN × Portugal National Football Team — Multi-stage Local Production in Portugal (2026)
Partnership launch, automotive commercial and pre-World Cup campaign filming · May–June 2026
Project details
Project Details
Creative Visuals provided continuous local production support in Portugal across several stages of CHANGAN Automobile’s 2026 partnership activation with the Portugal National Football Team. The work began in the week leading up to the official partnership event at Cidade do Futebol on 22 May, continued through the CHANGAN × Deco commercial filmed on 30 May, and extended to the final training-day campaign filming on 12 June. Production administration and supplier / crew payments continued after the last shoot.
Rather than a single isolated filming day, this became a multi-stage local production assignment involving technical recce work, crew building, same-day content delivery, commercial pre-production, studio preparation, equipment rental, sports-media filming and production close-out. It is a useful example of how an international campaign can require different local workflows over several weeks while still depending on one consistent production contact on the ground.

Stage 1 — 22 May: Partnership Launch at Cidade do Futebol
The first major production day was the public launch of CHANGAN’s global partnership with the Portuguese Football Federation at Cidade do Futebol in Oeiras. The official event included former Portugal internationals Vítor Baía and Ricardo Quaresma and marked the public announcement of the partnership.
In the week before the event, I carried out a technical recce at Cidade do Futebol to assess the space, camera positions, movement, power, production logistics and the practical requirements for fast delivery. I then assembled and coordinated a local team of two videographers, one on-location video editor and two photographers. I was one of the two videographers while also handling the local production.
The event was covered with four cameras — two fixed cameras and two mobile cameras on gimbals. The editor worked on location while filming was still taking place, and the photographers also processed their material on site. The video and photography were prepared and delivered to China on the same day, requiring a parallel production and post-production workflow rather than a conventional shoot-then-edit schedule.

Stage 2 — 30 May: CHANGAN × Deco — “How Are Legends Born?”
Selected Credits — CHANGAN × Deco
After the 22 May event, the focus moved directly into pre-production for the CHANGAN × Deco advertising film. The final campaign film, “How Are Legends Born?”, connects CHANGAN’s “Stay In The Game” concept with Deco’s legacy and was filmed in Lisbon on 30 May 2026.
Location Scouting for Planned Vehicle Sequences
During pre-production, I also carried out location scouting in Lisbon and along coastal areas near the city for vehicle sequences that were initially planned for the campaign. The intention was to film CHANGAN cars moving through Lisbon streets and in landscape-driven locations close to the Atlantic coast, so the scouting considered visual character, access, practical filming conditions and how the vehicles could be integrated into each setting.
Those local vehicle sequences were ultimately not filmed. The client later changed the production approach and chose to use footage supplied from China instead. The scouting work therefore did not appear in the finished film, but it remained part of the local pre-production process and illustrates how production plans can evolve after locations and logistics have already been assessed.
Transforming a Lisbon Studio into a Futuristic Automotive Set
With approximately one week to prepare the shoot, the work involved much more than securing a studio and booking local crew. The selected space had to be transformed from a bright green-and-white studio into a controlled, near-black environment capable of accommodating three vehicles, Deco and a highly graphic lighting design.
Working from the international production team’s visual and technical brief, Creative Visuals coordinated the Portuguese side of the preparation: studio research and practical checks, painting and set readiness, local suppliers, equipment requirements, crew scheduling and production logistics.
The Portuguese gaffer and lighting team built and installed two symmetrical structures of horizontal LED tubes behind the vehicles. The setup created clean linear reflections across the cars while establishing the dark, minimal and futuristic visual environment required by the campaign. Separate controlled lighting was prepared for Deco, together with the teleprompter, camera, grip and vehicle-handling requirements.
International Production, Portuguese Crew
The studio production brought together a team of approximately 40 people. With the exception of the international production leadership, the technical and supporting crew working on set was Portuguese and assembled locally for the shoot. As Local Producer / Fixer / Production Support, I sourced and coordinated the local crew, studio requirements, suppliers and practical resources needed to deliver the international production brief within the available preparation time.
The commercial was filmed using two ARRI Mini cameras. Local coordination covered camera and lighting departments, focus and camera assistance, grip, video assist, sound, teleprompter, makeup, wardrobe support, art department support, catering, vehicle preparation and other production needs before and during the shoot.
Behind the Scenes
Stage 3 — 12 June: “The Time Is Now” at the Portugal National Team’s Final Training Day
The third stage took place on 12 June 2026 at Cidade do Futebol, during the Portugal National Team’s final training day in Portugal before departure. I continued as local producer, handling equipment rental, local crew coordination, supplier arrangements and payments for the production.
The principal campaign material was again directed and photographed by Justin Woon. The camera package included a RED V-RAPTOR 8K VV with a telephoto lens, selected in part to allow high-frame-rate acquisition for slow-motion shots of the players and training-day activity.
Alongside the main unit, I filmed additional material with a Panasonic Lumix S5IIX, concentrating on what was happening around the team’s departure from the training complex: supporters waiting for the players, the atmosphere as the squad emerged after training and the team leaving Cidade do Futebol. I filmed only at Cidade do Futebol and did not accompany the team to São Bento or the airport.
Some of the material I filmed was incorporated into the released CHANGAN promotional film “The Time Is Now”, together with the principal footage captured by Justin Woon.
Production Continuity Across Several Weeks
From the technical recce and crew build before 22 May through the partnership event, the Deco commercial and the 12 June filming, I remained the local production contact across the different phases. After filming concluded, the work continued with the administrative close-out of the production, including payments to local crew, rental companies and suppliers.
This continuity is important in international production. The creative brief may change from a four-camera event with same-day editing, to a controlled automotive commercial with a 40-person crew, and then to a fast-moving sports-media environment requiring long-lens, high-frame-rate filming. The local production layer has to adapt while keeping crew, equipment, suppliers, logistics and communication connected across the campaign.

Case Study: Microsoft × Novo Banco — Local Production & Fixer Support in Portugal (2025)
International corporate production with Flicker Factory, filmed across Lisbon and Oeiras
Project details
Project Details
Creative Visuals was engaged through Crews Control to provide local production and fixer support in Portugal for Danish production company Flicker Factory, working on a Microsoft project about its strategic partnership with Novo Banco and the bank’s use of Microsoft technologies and AI tools, including Copilot.
The production took place in March 2025 and combined interviews, technology demonstrations, a multi-camera roundtable and supporting B-roll across several locations. Our role was to provide the local knowledge, crew, locations, equipment, transport and practical coordination needed by the visiting international team.

A look at the local production processLocation scouting, permits, local crew and equipment, acoustic treatment, transport logistics and weather contingency.
Location Scouting with a Creative Purpose
Pre-production involved more than finding technically suitable spaces. Locations also had to work in terms of access, travel time, filming permissions, technical requirements and the visual language of the project.
One of the key location challenges was finding an environment that would deliberately contrast with the modern, high-tech setting of Novo Banco’s headquarters. During the scouting process, Creative Visuals suggested the Palácio do Marquês de Pombal in Oeiras as a visually distinctive alternative, combining historic architecture and traditional Portuguese interiors with an atmosphere very different from the corporate technology environment. The palace was subsequently selected for filming, including an interview in its dining room and a multi-camera roundtable setup in the Salão Nobre.
Filming also took place at Novo Banco’s headquarters in Taguspark and at the Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena. Several Novo Banco branches were assessed for exterior B-roll, balancing visual suitability with geographic proximity and an efficient shooting route, followed by coordination of the necessary filming approvals. General Lisbon B-roll was filmed independently by the visiting production team.
Filming Permissions, Local Crew & Production Infrastructure
The external locations required formal local arrangements and filming permissions. At the same time, Creative Visuals sourced and coordinated the additional Portuguese crew and production resources required around the visiting team.
The local support structure included a production assistant, lighting assistant and sound technician, together with local transport, equipment collection and delivery, practical production supplies and on-site coordination throughout the filming week.
Additional lighting, grip, monitoring and video equipment was sourced locally as the technical requirements became clearer. Some needs emerged at very short notice, including specialist cables, signal converters and monitoring equipment. Through established local rental partnerships, the required material could be sourced and delivered to the production on the same filming day, avoiding disruption to the schedule.
Solving the Palace Acoustic Challenge
The palace interiors presented a different kind of production problem. The dining room used for the interview had significant natural reverberation, so heavy acoustic blankets were sourced locally and positioned around the filming area to reduce reflections and improve the recording environment.
The palace setups required several cameras, dedicated sound, lighting, grip and monitoring, temporarily adapting a historic interior to the technical needs of a contemporary corporate production while preserving the character that had made the location attractive in the first place.
Transport, Logistics & Weather Contingency
Local support also covered crew and client transport, movement of technical equipment between locations, rental collections and deliveries, catering and refreshments, and the day-to-day coordination required by a production moving between corporate offices and external locations.
The filming week coincided with severe weather in Portugal, including Storm Martinho, which brought strong winds and major disruption to the Lisbon region. This created additional logistical pressure and longer working days as transport, access and equipment movements had to be adapted to changing conditions.
Ahead of the filming day at Palácio do Marquês de Pombal, Creative Visuals made the decision to pre-position equipment at the palace the previous evening rather than move the full technical package the following morning. With conditions deteriorating overnight, having the equipment already secured on location substantially reduced risk and pressure on the filming day.
A Compact Production with Many Moving Parts
This was not a large-scale production in terms of crew size, but it required a broad range of local coordination across multiple locations and several different technical setups. The production moved between interviews, technology demonstrations, B-roll and a multi-camera roundtable while local crew, vehicles, equipment, permissions and practical requirements continued to evolve around the visiting team.
Creative Visuals worked as the local fixer and production-support layer around the international production — helping the team navigate Portugal, source the right people and resources, obtain access to locations and respond quickly when practical or technical requirements changed.
